Its been almost a month now since i watched Pacific Rim and as a fan of the genre, I wish to express what I think of the film, its not too late is it...?
I'd give it a score of 9.5 out 10. I should say that this is the kind of movie that I will buy a blu-ray copy of, and watch it again and again. If this movie is food, this movie is a super-sized bento box with 2 mains (Mecha and Kaiju genre), where you get a bit of a lot of other things, and dessert, prepared by Asian and Western chefs. This is how a western company should make Kaiju films. After seeing this film, I can agree with fellow kaiju fans that we should be all confident in the 2014 Godzilla film and what its going to be like. (knock on wood 3x)
I am not really surprised that the Pacific Rim, didnt do well in North America. Dont know why, but i think that if you are not familiar and did not grow up with Daikaiju, Tokustastu, Mecha, Super sentai as a package (not everyone likes Godzilla and other tokusatsu).. then maybe it will look too generic. But i do find that the Kaiju and Mecha genre are too specific for audience, and it does require a higher level of familiarity, and passion and love towards these kind of films to be able to get to that level of appreciation.
I thank Guillermo Del Toro and the gang for making this film. It is such a sweet ride.
My wish list for Pacific Rim sequel:
1) Ron Perlman gets his own Jaeger and drives it
2) A tie in with Godzilla film
3) Space aliens invades, humans found some surviving kaiju somewhere and becomes friends with them and fight space aliens together
4) or machine uprising (like terminator) then humans seek kaiju for help. lol
